On Wednesday, as part of the latest update to its long-term strategy, Hyundai announced a plan that enthusiasts will be pleased to hear: the Korean carmaker intends to build more performance models. In fact, far more performance models. The target is to lift annual sales of high-performance N series vehicles from the current 20,000 units a year to 100,000 units a year by 2030.

Hyundai does not plan to reach that target simply by producing more Ioniq 5 N and Elantra N models. Instead, the company’s strategy appears to be much broader. According to a report by Automotive News, Hyundai CEO Jose Muñoz is committed to expanding the N line-up to seven vehicles. Slides from the presentation shared on social media indicate that this plan includes rear-wheel-drive / all-wheel-drive models, as well as crossovers.

So what exactly could those new models be? Hyundai has already confirmed the Ioniq 6 N, so that one is clearly on the way soon. The crossover plans could point to the return of the Kona N, or perhaps a Tucson N based on the striking new model. And the “FR / AWD” slot mentioned in the presentation — referring to front-engined, rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive vehicles — appears expected to account for a relatively large portion of sales, which sounds encouraging. Thankfully, 2030 is not very far off, so we should begin hearing more about future N models fairly soon.

Hyundai is also preparing to introduce a new “high-volume” high-performance trim level, positioned between the current appearance-focused N Line trim and the full-fledged N series models. The thinking behind this new intermediate N performance variant is to attract buyers who want extra performance from their everyday car, without stepping all the way up to something as hardcore and track-focused as the Ioniq 5 N or Elantra N.

As for this new middle tier, there is no official word yet on what it will be called or which models will receive it. But once again, with 2030 approaching quickly, we can expect those details to emerge before too long.

Whatever the finer details may be, it is exciting to hear that Hyundai plans to invest heavily in performance cars. At a time when enthusiast vehicles from brands such as Porsche, BMW and even Chevrolet continue to become more expensive, Hyundai expanding its range with more N cars and other performance options at more accessible price points is a growth strategy that is easy to support.
