The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India has started a campaign regarding drug de-addiction. Releasing helpline number 14446 under this campaign, the ministry said, “Take a pledge to say no to drugs, spread awareness and strengthen the resolve for a drug-free India.” Along with this, the effects of drug abuse have also been explained.
The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has also explained the terms to drugs.
Acute intoxication—changes in consciousness, behavior, and perception following drug ingestion.
Overdose – Serious physical or mental effects from an excessive amount of a drug/substance.
Withdrawal-symptoms caused by sudden withdrawal after prolonged use.
Harmful use – Consumption that harms health and social life. Dependence – the state of increasing desire to consume a substance and losing control over it.
“Become a de-addiction friend and contribute towards building a healthy, drug-free India. Call the National De-addiction Helpline 14446 for assistance,” the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment said in another post.
According to the release issued by the Ministry on August 6, the Government of India is implementing 'Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan' (NMBA) as a nationwide campaign. Its objective is to prevent and reduce drug abuse by spreading awareness, community participation and creating better infrastructure for de-addiction.
The scope of this campaign, which was launched on August 15, 2020 in 272 districts sensitive to drug abuse, has been extended to all the districts of the country from August 2023. In this, special attention is being given to higher educational institutions, universities and schools.
Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment B. l. Verma gave this information in written reply to questions asked by Kanad Purkayastha and Babubhai Jesangbhai Desai in the Rajya Sabha.
The House was informed that with the continuous support of the States and Union Territories, the 'Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan' has reached out and sensitized more than 29.05 crore people through large-scale awareness and outreach activities across the country. These include more than 11.05 crore youth and 7.81 crore women.
