The summer transfer window shuts on 1 September, with clubs around Europe looking to complete their business before the 2026/27 season gets fully under way.

There have already been a number of eye-catching moves across the continent this summer, with Barcelona’s signing of Rodri and the transfers involving Morgan Rogers, Elliot Anderson and Bruno Guimaraes among the biggest stories.

Even so, while some sides may believe their work is finished, most clubs — particularly several in the Premier League — are aware they still need reinforcements if they are to compete properly this season.

Manchester City, Newcastle and Aston Villa all have key departures to cover for, while Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United and even champions Arsenal are still hoping to bring in late additions over the coming days. Big-spending Tottenham, too, may not yet be finished.

So, with only a few days remaining in the window, here are 10 big transfers that could still happen before deadline day:

Liverpool’s chase for PSG winger Bradley Barcola has been one of the major talking points of the summer. Although the Reds have not yet lodged an official bid for the France international, it is a move that could go right down to the wire. PSG are understood to want about £145m for the 23-year-old, and while Liverpool are not prepared to go that high, there remains optimism at Anfield that an agreement could be reached closer to £120m. Barcola was omitted from the PSG squad for last week’s French Super Cup, with manager Luis Enrique declining to discuss his future, and talks between the two clubs are still ongoing. PSG’s recruitment this summer — bringing in two wingers, Maghnes Akliouche and Mika Godts from Monaco and Ajax respectively, as well as forward Ferran Torres from Barcelona — suggests they may be preparing for Barcola’s exit.

Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez was booed on his return to Stamford Bridge after a difficult summer that ended with a red card and defeat in the World Cup final. The Argentine has previously indicated he would be open to leaving the Blues, and new Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca is known to admire his former midfielder. However, Chelsea had earlier imposed a deadline of 5pm on Friday 14 August for clubs to make offers for Fernandez, and with that deadline now gone the expectation at the club is that he will remain at Stamford Bridge. Xabi Alonso recently said Fernandez is “training really well”, but City are still expected to test Chelsea’s determination before the window closes with a bid at, or close to, the Blues’ £120m valuation.

Arsenal’s widely reported pursuit of Vinicius Jr may have ended in frustration, but the Gunners still want to bring in a left-sided attacker before the summer window closes. That has led them towards Juventus winger Kenan Yildiz, with the Turkiye international valued at more than £60m by the Serie A club. There is room for discussions, especially with Gabriel Martinelli nearing a switch to the Saudi Pro League, and this is one to keep an eye on in the final days of the window, even if the champions could yet choose to wait until January before strengthening in attack.

The story surrounding Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez is another that has continued all summer, and the Argentina international has been Arsenal’s leading target throughout the window. The Gunners appeared to look elsewhere after Alvarez made it clear he wanted to join Barcelona, but with Atletico refusing to negotiate with their LaLiga rivals, an opportunity could reopen for Mikel Arteta. Any move would have to break Arsenal’s transfer record, though, after Atletico rejected offers of £85m from Barcelona and £130m from Real Madrid. Atletico maintain that Alvarez is not available at any price this summer, telling Marca: “There is a 0% chance of selling Julián Alvarez to Barcelona”. But that stance could leave them with an unhappy player — or force a sale to Arsenal.

The Aston Villa goalkeeper came close to joining Manchester United last summer, but United chose Senne Lammens instead and Martinez remained at Villa Park. Now he appears likely to leave, with Chelsea among the clubs interested in him, after Robert Sanchez’s unconvincing start to the season increased the pressure at Stamford Bridge to strengthen in goal. Villa have already signed Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki from Parma in anticipation of Martinez departing, and his representatives have opened talks with the Blues.

Sarr has already been the subject of two rejected bids from Galatasaray, and now Liverpool have joined the race as they look to strengthen Andoni Iraola’s attacking options. The 28-year-old suits the profile of an Iraola player, offering pace and athleticism both on and off the ball, along with the technical quality to create and score goals while playing at high intensity. Palace insist they are determined to keep Sarr and have turned down a £50m offer from Liverpool, with it still unclear whether the Reds will return with an improved proposal.

Another Palace forward drawing attention from a fellow Premier League side is Jean-Philippe Mateta, who has scored 15 goals in each of the last three seasons at Selhurst Park. The 29-year-old is viewed as a possible replacement for Ollie Watkins, who is attracting interest from the Saudi Pro League, but Palace were not impressed by Villa’s proposed valuation and discussions have not yet moved forward.

This move appears to be close, with the West Ham full-back expected to complete a transfer worth around £40m in total. Brentford already have Rico Henry at left-back, but Diouf would add competition there and is also capable of playing further forward if needed. The fee is sizeable, but at 21 the defender is considered a long-term investment.

Balde was left out of Barcelona’s opening squad after manager Hansi Flick told him to take time to think carefully about his future. Reports since then have said Balde would prefer to remain at Camp Nou, but the young left-back is Manchester United’s top target as they seek to improve their defence, and Barcelona are believed to be willing to listen to serious offers. A fee of around £40m has been mentioned for the 22-year-old Spaniard if United choose to intensify their interest.

The Liverpool and Netherlands forward is known to be a target for Tottenham, who may still have more business to do despite their heavy spending this summer. But Liverpool would likely need at least two more arrivals at Anfield before they would consider approving a sale. Spurs are reported to have agreed personal terms with Gakpo, who scored on the opening weekend, but they have not yet submitted a formal bid to Liverpool, while Manchester City are also said to be monitoring the situation. It is one to watch in the final days of the window, though several other moves would need to happen first.
