Lucknow. There is news of relief for consumers amid continuously increasing sugar prices in Uttar Pradesh. The price of sugar in the wholesale market of the state has decreased by Rs 200 to Rs 300 per quintal in the last two days. That means the price has fallen by about Rs 2 to 3 per kg. After the strict appeal of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and the investigation campaign started in sugar mills and stockists, its effect has started becoming visible in the market.

Reduction of Rs 200-300 per quintal in two days

Increasing demand along with low production and alleged black marketing are also being considered as the reasons behind the recent rise in sugar prices. After the shortage of sugar in Maharashtra, big stockists there and businessmen of Kolkata started purchasing it on a large scale from the sugar mills of Uttar Pradesh. Due to this, demand suddenly increased and prices went up in the market.

The government started investigations at sugar mills and stockists to control the situation. After this, a decline in prices was recorded in the wholesale market.

Price decreased from Rs 5100 to Rs 4800 per quintal

According to departmental sources, after the shortage of sugar in Maharashtra about a month ago, big stockists and dealers of Kolkata and there had increased purchases from the mills of UP. Big buyers put tenders for purchase in the mills at the rate of Rs 4000 to Rs 5000 per quintal.

With increasing demand, sugar mills also increased prices. The price of sugar, which was being sold around Rs 5100 per quintal on August 22, came down to around Rs 4800 per quintal by August 23.

The price increases as it reaches the consumer from the mill.

According to experts, there is usually a difference of about Rs 5 to 6 per kg between sugar leaving the mill and reaching the customer. However, in the last one month, it has come to light that mills have been earning additional Rs 600 to Rs 700 per quintal.

At the same time, some middlemen are also accused of earning more profits. It is being told that in some cases the middlemen earned a profit of Rs 1000 to Rs 1500 per quintal. In view of this, the government has intensified the monitoring and investigation campaign.

180 lakh quintal sugar stock in UP

According to the Sugar Industry and Sugarcane Development Department, the sugar mills of the state have a stock of about 180 lakh quintals of sugar. About 40 lakh quintals of sugar is consumed every month in UP.

The department says that there will be adequate availability of sugar in the state till the start of the new crushing season. In such a situation, prices are expected to normalize in the coming days.

CM Yogi said – there is no shortage of sugar in the state

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has also clarified that there is no shortage of sugar in Uttar Pradesh. He said that the state has the capacity to feed 140 crore countrymen.

According to the Chief Minister, about 4 lakh tonnes of sugar is consumed every month in UP, while about 28 lakh tonnes of sugar is available in the state. This quantity is said to be equivalent to the requirement of approximately seven months.

New crushing season will start from October 15

According to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the new crushing season will start in sugar mills from October 15. After this, additional sugar production of about 90 lakh tonnes is expected.

The government says that considering the existing stock and the production from the new crushing season, there will be no shortage of sugar in the state. Also, due to continuation of action against black marketing and hoarding, further pressure on prices is expected in the market.
