What is eSIM Swap Scam: A very dangerous scam has emerged in the world of cybercrime, which is called e-SIM Swap Scam. In this scam, cyber thugs prey on people so cunningly that the victim does not even know and the entire amount is withdrawn from their bank account.

Under the e-SIM scam, the scammers first deactivate the physical SIM in the user’s smartphone. Then the hackers or scammers set up an eSIM of the victim’s number in their phone. After gaining full control of the SIM card, the scammers access One Time Password (OTP) and other banking authentication. After this they start transferring money from the bank account unknowingly and the user doesn’t even realize it.

Chess way to cheat:

  1. A cyber thug usually calls the victim posing as a customer executive of a telecom company.
  2. They take the user through various steps to complete the SIM conversion or upgrade process.
  3. To fool the user they show the excuse of network or service being down for 24 hours, as as a rule the OTP service is down during the initial 24 hours of SIM conversion.
  4. As soon as the message and OTP service starts, scammers start withdrawing money from the account. Last year, a woman from Noida also became a victim of e-SIM scam in this way.

Setup and risk of e-SIM:

Setting up an eSIM in a smartphone is very easy. Android or iPhone users only have to scan the provided QR Code. Scammers get the user details and OTP from the users and get the e-SIM activated on their devices.

Key tips to avoid scams:

  • Do not give confidential details: Never share your OTP, Aadhaar card details, email id or password with any stranger.
  • Do not scan unknown QR Code: If someone in the name of customer care calls for SIM upgrade or eSIM activation and asks to scan the QR code, be alert immediately.
  • In case of network loss contact immediately: If your phone suddenly loses SIM network or shows ‘No Service’, contact the concerned telecom company’s store or customer care immediately without delay.
