West Ham United are not having things entirely their own way this summer, either in the transfer market or on the pitch.

Wrexham have reportedly struck an agreement with Ligue 1 club SCO Angers for defender Jacques Ekomie, according to a report from Foot Mercato.

West Ham United and German side Hamburger SV had also been reported as being in the race for the 23-year-old left-back.

French sports daily L'Équipe had earlier reported West Ham’s interest in the Gabon international, with Angers valuing the player at €10 million (£8.7m).

However, Wrexham are now believed to have gone in front in negotiations and are set to complete terms with the French club before West Ham could do so.

This development follows a winless beginning to the Championship season for West Ham after their relegation from the Premier League last term.

Despite keeping one of the highest-paid squads in the second tier, West Ham have taken one draw and one defeat from their first two league matches, against Burnley and Charlton Athletic respectively.

West Ham still have considerable transfer funds after the earlier sales of Crysencio Summerville and Mateus Fernandes in this window.

The sizeable fees brought in from those two exits gave the club room to strengthen the squad, but on this occasion no deal for Ekomie was completed.

Ekomie joined Angers from Bordeaux in 2024 and has made more than 50 appearances in French football.

His expected move to Wrexham now leaves West Ham looking for other defensive options in the closing days of the transfer window.
