Barcelona forward Roony Bardghji has suffered a major ACL tear in training, dealing a huge blow to plans for a summer move away from the club. The 20-year-old Sweden international had been told by manager Hansi Flick to look for a new team before the injury setback struck.
Bardghji has sustained a serious ACL tear in his right knee, Barcelona confirmed on Tuesday. The injury has completely ended any plans for the Sweden international to be transferred before the summer window shuts on September 1.
The 20-year-old picked up the serious injury during a training session on Monday. Medical examinations confirmed that he will need surgery in the coming days, which means he is set for several months out of action. The setback has come at the worst possible moment for Bardghji, who had been actively preparing for a move away from the Catalan side after discussions with the club's management.
In a cruel turn of events, the injury came only days after Flick informed Bardghji that he should find a new club. According to ESPN, Flick was honest with the player and told him that first-team opportunities would be very hard to secure at Barca in the coming season.
In an effort to protect the player from a possible injury before a summer exit, Bardghji was intentionally left out of the squad for Saturday's friendly matches against Nottingham Forest and Udinese. However, the winger then suffered the tear during training on Monday. Barcelona had already received enquiries from clubs across Europe, including interest from the Premier League, and transfer discussions were expected to gather pace before this unfortunate setback.
This is the second time the Sweden international has suffered a torn ACL in his right knee. Bardghji had previously suffered the very same serious injury while playing for Copenhagen in 2024. The winger joined Barcelona last summer from Copenhagen in a deal worth around €2 million. He then made 28 appearances in all competitions during his first season in Spain, scoring two goals.
However, most of those appearances came as a substitute. His chances of getting regular game time were already expected to reduce even more after the summer arrivals of forwards Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi.
With the transfer window closing on September 1, the serious injury has fully ruled out any possibility of Bardghji leaving this summer. The 20-year-old will undergo surgery in the coming days before beginning a lengthy rehabilitation process in Barcelona. He is now set to spend the upcoming season recovering at the club instead of sealing a move elsewhere. Bardghji will now concentrate entirely on his recovery as he tries to come back from a second major knee setback in his young career.
