Most people whose cars are stolen eventually come to terms with the likelihood that they may never get them back. As days become weeks, then months, and eventually years, the chances of a reunion grow slimmer and slimmer. But one muscle car owner in California recently got the sort of phone call they had probably stopped hoping for decades ago: according to the California Highway Patrol's Auburn office, a 1971 Chevrolet Chevelle SS that was stolen in San Mateo County in 1993 has now been recovered and returned to its rightful family.
The surprise discovery happened during a VIN inspection. According to the authorities, officers from CHP Auburn noticed something about the Chevelle that prompted a closer examination. Investigators have not explained exactly what aroused suspicion, but a further check confirmed that the classic Chevrolet in front of them was the very same car reported stolen more than 30 years ago.
CHP Auburn then coordinated with the San Mateo Police Department to verify the Chevelle's history and track down its original owner. “After more than three decades, this classic is finally back where it belongs,” CHP Auburn said in a Facebook post announcing the recovery.
Where exactly the Chevelle spent the years since Jurassic Park was released is still unknown. CHP has not disclosed how the vehicle ended up with the person who brought it in for the VIN inspection, or whether that person was aware of the car's stolen past. Even so, based on the photograph shared in the Facebook post, the Chevelle SS appears to be in excellent condition and seemingly ready for its next cruise night.
It is entirely possible that the person who had this Chevrolet before it was returned to its pre-theft owner believed they had bought it legitimately, and may even have looked after it for years before unexpectedly finding out it belonged to someone else. If that is what happened, then the ending carries a bittersweet note. While it is good news that the person who lost the car in 1993 has finally got their Chevelle back after 33 years, it is also hard not to feel some sympathy for someone who may genuinely have believed the classic was legally theirs.
