Frozen oven chips will be tastier and crispier when coated in homemade mix before cooking

Frozen chips are handy for a quick dinner, but they can taste incredibly boring. It’s also super easy to undercook and overcook them, leaving you with hard, tasteless results. While it’s simple to make chips yourself from scratch, having a bag in the freezer is great for convenience.

Although it’s tempting to just throw them in the air fryer or oven straight away, spending a little extra time adding a few ingredients can enhance their texture and flavour. Tesco shared the recipe on their website, which takes just five minutes to prepare. The recipe notes said: “These aren’t just any oven fries, they’re covered in an array of tangy and exciting flavours. Enjoy a little lift from the herbs and spices, then bake them until golden and crisp.”

Put the oven chips on a large baking tray before drizzling with the vegetable oil. Next, sprinkle the chips with the smoked paprika, sea salt flakes, dried rosemary and garlic granules. If you like a spicy chip, add a quarter teaspoon of cayenne pepper.

Toss the frozen chips well to ensure each chip is coated in the spices, and cook according to the packet instructions.

The chips will be golden and crisp thanks to the vegetable oil, and they will have a delicious flavour from the four-ingredient spice mix.

This method can also work in an air fryer if the packet instructions call for it. They may turn even crispier thanks to the air circulating in the appliance.

If you have time to cook chips from scratch, it’s best to use Maris Piper potatoes, about 350g for two people.

Then boil them for three minutes, leave to steam-dry for five minutes, and transfer them to a baking tray. Add a little oil and salt before baking them in a 220°C/200°C Fan oven for 18 to 20 minutes, then turn them over and bake for a further eight minutes.

For sweet potato fries, rinsing isn’t necessary, but Tesco recommends adding a little olive oil, sugar, and salt before baking them for extra flavour.
