From match-winners and defensive mainstays to players who made an immediate statement on the opening weekend, we have picked the best-performing XI from the first round of Premier League fixtures. So, who made the cut?

The Greek international produced five saves on an impressive debut for Hull. The 23-year-old arrival from Olympiacos denied Bryan Mbeumo twice with smart stops on the way to a clean sheet, as Hull pulled off the surprise result of the weekend.

Michael Kayode celebrated a memorable milestone in style as Brentford handed Spurs a reality check. The full-back was making his 50th Premier League appearance and capped it with a goal in the 3-0 victory. Constantly involved, he is developing into one of the league’s best two-way full-backs.

He dealt with everything that came his way as Leeds stood strong at Nottingham Forest before snatching a late win. Bijol recorded nine clearances and won nine defensive duels at the heart of the Leeds backline, earning his clean sheet.

It was a dream debut for the club-record signing, who powered in Hull’s second goal in their 2-0 win over Manchester United. The defender dominated Manchester United’s often aimless deliveries into the box, finishing with 12 clearances.

He continues to improve in a defensive role. Lewis-Potter showed he can be Brentford’s first-choice full-back this season with an excellent display against Spurs. He drifted into the box to score the opener and remained a threat throughout the match.

Clubs bigger than Brentford had shown interest in Mamadou Sangare last season, and the midfielder’s debut for the Bees may have left some regretting not making a move. The Malian seemed to cover every blade of grass in Brentford’s big win over Tottenham Hotspur, smothering Spurs.

Sangare created the opening goal after a sharp one-two with Dango Ouattara and received a huge ovation when he was substituted. He arrived for a club-record fee, but on debut he showed exactly why.

David Moyes has admitted he has been surprised by how quickly Harrison Armstrong has developed into a first-team option, and the 19-year-old was trusted to start on the opening weekend. A full-blooded display from the academy graduate should mean the shirt is now his to lose.

He scored twice inside a minute as Brighton ran riot against Aston Villa. Hinshelwood was in the right place at the right time to head home from Diego Gomez’s delivery, before punishing another defensive error to fire in his second.

Hinshelwood has real intelligence around the penalty area and will be aiming for more goals from midfield this season.

Everton have insisted Iliman Ndiaye is not for sale this summer, and with good reason. The Senegal international stood out from the right against Crystal Palace, posing a constant threat to the Eagles’ defence.

Ndiaye is capable of moments of magic, and his cross for Thierno Barry’s goal was a perfect example — an accurate delivery for the forward to nod home.

He continued his impressive start at Arsenal. Christos Tzolis was a goals-and-assists machine at Club Brugge last season and looks capable of producing strong numbers in the Premier League as well.

An electric debut saw Tzolis trouble Coventry repeatedly and help create Bukayo Saka’s second goal.

Who saw this coming? Yoane Wissa’s first season at Newcastle was a nightmare, but the forward responded with a standout display on the opening weekend.

Wissa led a new-look Newcastle to a draw with Liverpool and was a menace throughout for the visitors, leading the match for duels won (11) and high pressures (41), while ranking second for shots (4) and tackles (4). His excellent work also set up Joe Willock for the second goal.
