Jurel was demoted to No.7 with Ravindra Jadeja promoted ahead at No.6. That seemed to have ticked a switch in Jurel, who put on a composed batting display. The Rajasthan Royals star did not take undue risks, stitching vital partnerships along the way to stretch India closer to 500.
He found an ally in Mohammad Siraj who stayed at his end to help Jurel get to the milestone. It wasn't without drama with Jurel stranded on 95 when rain intervened. When the action resumed, Jurel was stuck on 99 for more than 3 overs, before a risky single saw him get to the three-figure mark.
The knock of Jurel might have pleased the management immensely as this was his second fifty in as many Tests after going without a 50-plus score in eight innings prior to the first Test in Galle.
