Health Desk. Liver is one of the most important organs of the body. It plays an important role in digestion, removal of toxic substances from the body and many important chemical processes. Due to liver swelling or any disease, some people may feel pain or discomfort in certain parts of the body. However, liver disease cannot be confirmed based on pain alone.
1. Pain in the upper right part of the stomach
The liver is located in the right upper part of the stomach. When the liver becomes swollen or its size increases, pain, heaviness or pressure may be felt in this area. Such persistent or recurring problems should not be ignored.
2. Pain can reach the right shoulder
In some cases, pain caused by problems in or around the liver can be felt up to the right shoulder. This is called referred pain. However, there can be many other causes of shoulder pain.
3. There may be problems in the back also
In some liver conditions, discomfort or pain may be felt in the upper part of the stomach as well as in the back. If it is accompanied by symptoms like swelling in the stomach, weakness or yellowing of the skin and eyes, then medical examination is necessary.
4. Flatulence and heaviness
In case of severe liver disease, accumulation of fluid in the stomach i.e. ascites may occur. Due to this, problems like flatulence, heaviness and strain may be felt.
When to contact a doctor?
If the pain in the right upper part of the stomach persists, increases or is accompanied by problems like jaundice, severe weakness, vomiting, excessive swelling or confusion in the stomach, then a doctor should be consulted immediately. Through timely investigation, the cause of liver problem can be found and proper treatment can be started.
