India needs to align education with employment, skills and entrepreneurship. Strengthening vocational learning, practical exposure, industry-academia partnerships and entrepreneurial thinking can help bridge the graduate-employment gap.
One of the greatest challenges before education today, from school to postgraduate level, is to align learning with the changing needs of the economy and society. The fundamental purpose of education is not merely to impart knowledge but to prepare learners with the competencies required to contribute meaningfully to national development. This was, in fact, one of the guiding principles behind the evolution of Outcome Based Education (OBE), which shifted the focus from what institutions teach to what learners are able to do after completing their education.
In simple terms, the "supply side" of education must continuously respond to the "demand side" of the economy. When educational institutions produce graduates whose knowledge, skills and attitudes match employment opportunities, unemployment and underemployment are naturally reduced. Conversely, when this linkage is weak, a growing mismatch develops between the number of graduates and the jobs available to them.
This mismatch has become one of India's most pressing developmental challenges.
