Indian stock markets started the first trading session of the week with gains on Monday. After the ongoing pressure for the last few sessions, both Sensex and Nifty were trading in the green.
In early trade, the Sensex rose by about 198 points to reach 77,738.54. Nifty 50 is also trading around 24,296.25, up 44.25 points. The market’s growth was supported by buying in some leading stocks in the IT sector. According to early trading data, the number of gainers in the market is more than the decliners.
After the start of trading on Monday, about 1,543 shares were trading with gains. About 920 shares remained in the red. Another 233 shares saw little change in early trade. Due to this, investor sentiment has improved compared to the previous session.
But even after the initial rise, the direction of the market during trading may depend on global cues, activity of foreign investors, movement of rupee, buying in key sectors.
The IT sector was the mainstay of the market’s growth in early trading on Monday. Infosys shares reached Rs 1,143 with a rise of 1.96 per cent. HCL Technologies traded at Rs 1,321.20 with a gain of 1.44 per cent. Buying trend was also seen in major IT stocks like TCS, Tech Mahindra. Nifty IT index was one of the major gainers led by gains in IT stocks.
Investors also showed interest in the metal sector. Shares of Hindalco Industries rose by about 1.33 percent to Rs 1,047.80. An upward trend was also seen in Tata Steel in early trade.
Among banking stocks, HDFC Bank is trading at Rs 732.85, up by about 0.81 percent. Coal India closed at Rs 408.60 with a gain of about 0.84 per cent. Buying was also seen in other major stocks including Mahindra & Mahindra.
While IT and metal stocks supported the market, selling trend was seen in some pharma and consumer sector stocks. Cipla was trading at Rs 1,413.80, down around 1.28 per cent. It was one of the major losers. Apollo Hospital also recorded a decline of about 0.72 percent and the share remained around Rs 8,630.
A decline of about 0.45 to 0.50 percent was recorded in Titan and Grasim Industries. Shares of Bajaj Finance, Adani Ports, Bajaj Finserv were also seen under mild pressure in early trade.
Sector-wise, Nifty IT led the market with a gain of around 0.96 per cent. Nifty Energy rose by about 0.48 percent and Nifty Realty rose by about 0.36 percent. On the other hand, Nifty Pharma fell by about 0.66 per cent, while Nifty PSU Bank saw a marginal decline of about 0.11 per cent.
