FC Bayern came through an entertaining Supercup clash in Dortmund, with Vincent Kompany’s team proving clinical in front of goal in the first half before the contest became far more competitive as Niko Kovac’s substitutions made a clear impact.
The home side began well, with debutant Konstantinos Karetsas looking lively throughout the opening 20 minutes. Serhou Guirassy registered the first effort of the match shortly before Bayern began to take control of proceedings.
Harry Kane then tried an audacious long-range effort in an attempt to catch Gregor Kobel off his line in the Dortmund goal. A minute later, the Rekordmeister went in front as Nathaniel Brown marked his debut with a goal.
The Germany international, who had also found the net in each of the previous two friendlies, reacted sharply to fire home a well-placed finish after excellent work from Michael Olise, who took advantage of Joshua Kimmich’s long ball.
Aside from Ramy Bensebaini finding the net from an offside position, Bayern remained in control for the rest of the first half. Kobel produced a solid save to keep out Luis Diaz, before Brown went close to completing a debut brace.
Even so, Bayern still doubled their lead before the interval as Olise scored an individual goal after Jobe Bellingham lost possession in a dangerous area. Following the rumours linking him with a move to Real Madrid in the opening weeks of the transfer window, the Frenchman once again underlined his quality with a first-half goal and assist.
Giannis Konstantelias came on at the start of the second half, replacing 18-year-old Italian Samuele Inácio, while Joey Veerman also made his Dortmund debut later in the half. Despite encouraging signs of a Greek connection for Dortmund, they could not beat Manuel Neuer, with the 40-year-old producing an outstanding reaction save to deny Karetsas.
Kovac had used all his substitutions before the 75-minute mark, and one of those calls finally brought BVB back into the contest. Fabio Silva, who had replaced Guirassy among the earlier changes, reduced the deficit for the hosts with 15 minutes of normal time remaining.
Konstantelias started the move well by intercepting a poor pass from Jonathan Tah, before Daniel Svensson set up the Portuguese forward. Five minutes later, Ismael Saibari was introduced for his official debut in place of fellow summer signing Brown.
Bayern were able to steady themselves after Dortmund’s goal, with Kobel forced into a couple of saves from efforts by Aleksander Pavlovic and Olise. At the other end, Silva’s weak header was the only notable chance before Bellingham nearly took advantage of a Neuer howler.
Just before the beginning of the five minutes of injury time, Bensebaini was sent off for his challenge on Saibari. Olise and Maximilian Beier both had gilt-edged opportunities at either end in a dramatic finish, as Bayern secured their 12th Supercup title. The Bavarians have now won both editions since the competition was renamed in honour of Franz Beckenbauer.
Kompany’s side will host Stuttgart when the Bundesliga begins on Friday. Dortmund will also be at home against HSV in the season’s first Topspiel next weekend.
