New Delhi:This time Ekadashi of Sawan Shukla Paksha is being celebrated as Putrada Ekadashi on Sunday, 23 August 2026. This fast dedicated to Lord Vishnu is considered to have special importance from religious point of view. It is believed that fasting and worshiping with devotion on Putrada Ekadashi fulfills the wishes of children's happiness, health and prosperity of the family. This time Ekadashi Tithi will start at around 2 am on the night of 23rd August and will continue till 4:18 am on 24th August. Due to the rules of Udaya Tithi, the fast for householders is being observed on 23rd August.
Putrada Ekadashi is also called Pavitra Ekadashi at some places. On this day, there is a tradition of worshiping Lord Vishnu, chanting mantras, fasting and donating. Couples who wish to have a child observe this fast with special devotion. At the same time, many people also worship Lord Vishnu for the long life, good health and happy life of their children. This Ekadashi falls during Chaturmas, hence its importance increases further. In religious beliefs, devotion, restraint, worship and charity to Lord Vishnu during Chaturmas is considered especially fruitful.
Putrada Ekadashi 2026 auspicious time
According to the Panchang, the time from 7:23 am to 12:24 pm is considered auspicious for worshiping Lord Vishnu on August 23. Whereas Abhijeet Muhurta will be from 11:58 am to 12:49 pm. There may be a slight difference in time according to the city and local almanac.

According to the Panchang, the fast can be broken on August 24 between 1:26 pm to 3:55 pm. The time of Paran may be different in other places, so it would be advisable to check the local almanac.
Worship Lord Vishnu like this
Those observing fast should take bath in the morning, wear clean clothes and clean the place of worship. Take a pledge to fast by lighting a lamp in front of the picture or statue of Lord Vishnu. After this, offer yellow flowers, sandalwood, fruits and naivedya to Shri Hari. Offering Tulsi Dal in puja is also considered auspicious. After this chant the mantras of Lord Vishnu. Devotees can recite Vishnu Sahasranama or chant the mantra 'Om Namo Bhagwate Vasudevaya' as per their convenience. Perform Aarti in the evening and listen or read the story of Putrada Ekadashi.
What to eat during fast?
Rice and grains are generally not consumed during Ekadashi fast. Devotees can observe fast without water, only water or fruits as per their capacity. Fruits, milk, makhana, sago and other sattvik things can be consumed during the fast. If you have any kind of health problem, you should avoid rigorous fasting.
Donation also has special importance
According to religious beliefs, it is considered auspicious to provide food, clothes or financial assistance to the needy as per one's capacity on this day. Along with worshiping Lord Vishnu, helping a needy person is also considered virtuous.
Fast story of Putrada Ekadashi
According to the legend, King Mahijit of Mahishmati city was religious and looked after the welfare of his people, but he did not get the happiness of a child. Seeing his problem, the sages advised him to fast on Putrada Ekadashi of Shravan Shukla Paksha. The king and the people observed the fast with devotion as per the advice of sage Lomash and dedicated its virtue to the king. It is believed that after this the king was blessed with a child. For this reason, Putrada Ekadashi is seen to be associated with the happiness of children and good wishes for children.
What to do today?
Worship Lord Vishnu and Mother Lakshmi. Offer Tulsi Dal and chant Vishnu Mantra. Listen or read the story of Ekadashi and donate food or clothes to the needy. Next day, break the fast at the scheduled time on Dwadashi Tithi.
