India captain Shubman Gill has a chance to achieve two major milestones when India take on Sri Lanka in the second Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo from Sunday. With the series on the line, Gill could also make significant gains in the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) cycle and his overall Test career.
Shubman Gill is currently level with England captain Joe Root for the most centuries in the ongoing WTC 2025-27 cycle. Both batters have registered five centuries so far.
A hundred in Colombo would take Gill ahead of Root and make him the outright leader for centuries in the current WTC cycle.
Gill is also just 26 runs short of reaching 1,000 runs in the championship. He has accumulated 974 runs in nine Tests at an impressive average of 69.57. England’s Joe Root and Harry Brook currently lead the overall run-scoring charts with 1,174 and 1,147 runs respectively.
The Indian skipper is also on the verge of another important career landmark. Gill needs just seven runs in Colombo to complete 3,000 runs in Test cricket.
He has scored 2,993 runs in 42 Tests so far, with eight centuries and 11 half-centuries to his name. Reaching the milestone in the second Test would add another achievement to his growing Test career.
Gill, however, will be looking to bounce back after an underwhelming outing in the first Test in Galle. He managed only 16 runs from 28 balls in the first innings and was dismissed for eight in the second.
India won the opening Test by 165 runs, with Devdutt Padikkal producing a superb 167 and Manav Suthar making a major impact with 10 wickets.
India and Sri Lanka face off in Colombo
The second Test begins at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo on Sunday, August 23, at 10:00 AM IST. India will be aiming to seal the series after their victory in Galle, while Sri Lanka will be desperate to level the contest on home soil.
With three significant milestones within reach, Gill will be eager to turn his attention back to run-scoring in the second Test.
