Manchester United urged to prioritise striker signing despite Carlos Baleba move

Michael Carrick has been advised to turn his attention elsewhere after making three midfield additions.

Manchester United have been told they need to bring in another striker before the transfer window closes.

Carrick’s side endured a difficult opening to the season as they were beaten 2-0 by Hull City and offered very little against the newly promoted team.

Head coach Michael Carrick named his revamped midfield featuring Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, who together cost £87million, but the duo were overwhelmed.

Another midfielder, Carlos Baleba, is due to complete his move next week in a deal worth £70m, although he will arrive injured and must wait for his debut.

Matheus Cunha led the line, with Bryan Mbeumo on the right and Bruno Fernandes in support, but the three found it difficult to carve out clear-cut chances.

Benjamin Sesko and Marcus Rashford were introduced from the bench, but they could not haul their side back into the match, and Owen Hargreaves believes his former club were missing a proper focal point in attack.

“I think they could probably do with another striker option,” former Manchester United and England midfielder Hargreaves told TNT Sports.

“Sesko didn’t start and Cunha played a little bit deeper. He’s a number 10 and he’s very effective off the left.

“With Baleba coming into the team, it is a good squad and a top-four squad.”

Hargreaves said United looked most threatening on the counter-attack last season, but had problems when coming up against a side defending deep.

“Today, when they had possession of the ball, they didn’t look like scoring,” he added.

“I think it will be easier when the space opens up. Today there wasn’t that. They have to go back to the drawing board and look at what they can do differently.”
