Before the upcoming assembly elections in Punjab, the wife of state Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has been accused of corruption worth Rs 5 crore. Politics has also intensified in this regard after the intervention of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

In this episode, Shiromani Akali Dal MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal targeted Aam Aadmi Party and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. Rasimrat Kaur Badal said on the social media platform 'X', “The allegations of corruption of Rs 5 crore against the wife of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann are so serious that the National Human Rights Commission had to intervene in it.”

She further said, “Eagerly waiting to see the 'Action Taken Report' from Punjab Chief Secretary and DGP. The deadline is 2 weeks! Save this tweet. I will ask Punjab AAP again on September 5.”

Earlier, NHRC took cognizance of the allegations against Gurpreet Kaur, wife of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. The commission directed state officials to investigate the matter and submit a report on the action taken.

A National Human Rights Commission bench headed by NHRC member Priyank Kanungo took cognizance of the matter under Section 12 of the 'Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993'.

The Registry has been directed to issue notice to the Chief Secretary to the Government of Punjab (Chandigarh) and the DGP of Punjab. They should be directed to get the allegations made in the complaint investigated and submit an 'action taken report' within two weeks for the perusal of the Commission.

“A retired judge publicly stated that a demand of Rs 5 crore was made in a rape case allegedly involving the wife of the Punjab Chief Minister,” the commission said in the notice quoting the complainant.

The complaint filed by 'Legal Rights Observatory' expressed concern that such interference could affect the victim's right to dignity, security, fair investigation and access to justice. “It calls for an independent investigation into the allegations, safeguarding of evidence and a fair investigation into any attempt to weaken or influence the investigation.”

It said, “The complainant has raised the point that the rape victim's right to get justice should be above any influence, status or position. The allegations made in the complaint prima facie appear to be a violation of the human rights of the victim.
