The Athletic has reported that Manchester United have reached an agreement with Brighton for Carlos Baleba in a deal worth up to £70m, made up of an initial £65m plus a further £5m in add-ons. The 22-year-old Cameroon international is now expected to travel later tonight and undergo a medical on Saturday.
United are continuing with their summer rebuild under Michael Carrick as they get ready for a return to the Champions League. Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and goalkeeper Karl Darlow have already joined from Chelsea, Aston Villa and Leeds United respectively.
Midfield has been one of the club's main priorities because of exits and fitness setbacks. Casemiro has departed on a free transfer, while Manuel Ugarte is out with a ligament injury sustained at the World Cup.
Baleba is also working his way back to full fitness after suffering an ankle ligament problem during the summer break. That issue kept him out of Brighton's 0-0 draw with Tromso in the first leg of their Conference League qualifier on Thursday.
United's interest in the player has been ongoing for some time, with the club's scouts having followed the former Lille midfielder over several seasons. They kept a close watch on him throughout the 2025-26 campaign after looking into a possible move last summer.
Baleba moved to Brighton from Lille in the summer of 2023 and has gone on to make 112 appearances for the Seagulls. He started 23 Premier League matches last season.
