Sachin Tendulkar had scored 68 half-centuries in his career of 200 Test matches, whereas Root equaled this figure in just 167 Tests. Given Root's consistently brilliant batting and ability to play long innings, many of Sachin's historical records now seem to be under threat.

Root's biggest target is the record of scoring most runs in Test cricket. Sachin Tendulkar has scored 15,921 runs in 200 Test matches, while Root has so far scored 14,180 runs in his name. That means there is currently a difference of 1,741 runs between the two. Considering the consistency with which Root is batting, this gap may reduce in the future. Apart from this, Root is also eyeing the record of scoring most centuries in Test cricket. Sachin has 51 Test centuries to his name, while Root has scored 41 centuries. That means he is 10 centuries away from this record. However, in the race for this record, veteran batsmen like Jacques Kallis and Ricky Ponting are also present in front of him.

The third big record is of playing the most number of matches in Test cricket. Sachin Tendulkar played 200 Test matches in his legendary career, which is still a historic achievement. Root has played 167 Tests so far and if he touches the mark of 200 Test matches, he will have a strong chance of breaking Sachin's record of most Test runs. That means, at present, Root is not only equaling Sachin's records, but is also gradually getting very close to his biggest records.
