But does this mean that the soap kills the rabies virus and there is no need for the vaccine? Such claims going viral on social media have created confusion among people. The reality is that it is very important to wash the wound immediately and thoroughly, but thinking of it as a treatment for rabies can be a dangerous mistake. The disease is almost always fatal once the symptoms of rabies begin, so it is extremely important to seek timely medical attention after being bitten by a dog or any suspected infected animal.

What is the benefit of washing with soap?

According to Dr. Sunit K Singh, Director and Senior Virologist, Dr. Ambedkar Center for Biomedical Research, New Delhi, after coming in contact with dog saliva, it is important to clean the wound thoroughly with soap and running water. This helps in removing viruses and other contaminants present on the wound. However, it is not correct to assume that the risk of rabies is eliminated just by washing the wounds. Soap and water are part of the initial rabies prevention process, but medical evaluation and, if necessary, post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) may be necessary.

How does soap affect viruses?

Rabies virus is an enveloped virus. Soap and detergent can damage the outer membrane of the virus under laboratory conditions. But in real life the situation of animal bite is different. The virus can reach the body tissues with infected saliva. Therefore, mere application of soap cannot be expected to eliminate the virus that has entered the body. This is why it is very important to seek medical help after washing the wound.

Do not delay the vaccine

Rabies virus usually enters the body through the saliva of an infected animal and can reach the central nervous system through the veins. Once clinical symptoms of the disease develop, effective treatment is not available and the disease is almost always fatal. Therefore, anti-rabies vaccination should not be delayed after possible exposure. In some severe exposures, doctors may also recommend giving rabies immunoglobulin (RIG). What treatment is necessary depends on the location of the bite, the severity of the wound, and the circumstances of contact with the animal.

What to do immediately if dog bites?

After being bitten by a dog or suspicious animal, immediately wash the wound with soap and running water for about 15 minutes. After this, go to the medical center and consult a doctor. Avoid applying chilli, oil, mud or any household substance on the wound.
