Tezzbuzz Desk-The central government has launched a new mobile manufacturing scheme worth Rs 62,500 crore to promote the manufacturing of mobile phones in the country. This scheme has come into effect from April 1, 2026 and will continue till 2031. The government has set a target of mobile phone production of about Rs 39 lakh crore during this period.
Launching the scheme on Friday, Union Information and Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that its aim is to strengthen mobile manufacturing as well as the entire electronics ecosystem in India. The government will provide support to Indian companies at different levels of manufacturing, so that the production capacity in the country can be increased.
According to the minister, a major reason for the increase in mobile phone prices is the rising cost of memory chips. In such a situation, the government is also working on promoting the production of memory chips in the country and steps are being taken towards setting up manufacturing units for this.
Incentive will be available on sales and production
Under this scheme, eligible companies will be given incentive of up to 5 percent on the basis of production and sale of mobile phones. The government claims that India has now become a net exporter of mobile phones, not an importer. About 99.2 percent of mobile handsets used in the country are manufactured in India.
The government expects the new scheme to create around 60,000 direct employment opportunities. Ashwini Vaishnav said that after 2014, electronics manufacturing in India has increased by about seven times, while the export of electronics has increased by about 11 times.
Different eligibility for companies
In the scheme, different eligibility has been fixed for mobile phone manufacturers and Electronics Manufacturing Service i.e. EMS companies. It will be necessary for mobile phone manufacturing companies to have a turnover of at least Rs 10,000 crore in the financial year 2026. At the same time, the minimum turnover limit for EMS companies has been kept at Rs 1,000 crore.
The government believes that this scheme will expand mobile manufacturing in the country, strengthen domestic companies and MSMEs and India will be able to further strengthen its position globally in the field of electronics manufacturing.
