The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) is preparing a lucrative new contract extension for head coach Luis de la Fuente after Spain’s historic 2026 World Cup triumph. The governing body wants to extend his current deal, which runs until 2028, so that he remains in charge through the 2030 tournament, which Spain will co-host with Portugal and Morocco.
Federation chiefs plan reward
The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has officially opened talks over a contract extension for De la Fuente after his landmark achievement in leading La Roja to their second World Cup title. The 65-year-old coach is presently tied down until 2028 after signing fresh terms soon after a change in federation leadership. Spanish football’s governing body is now keen to secure the national team boss’s long-term future through to the 2030 tournament on home soil.
President confirms ongoing negotiations
RFEF president Rafael Louzan said extending De la Fuente’s stay would be a deserved reward for his dedication, humility and leadership across every level of the national team structure.
Speaking in an interview with Radio Nacional de Espana (RNE), Louzan said: "I think it is something Luis deserves and we are working on it. We are going to work on it now, and in fact we are already doing so, to extend his contract, which currently runs until 2028, so that we can take it beyond or around 2030 because he has to be part of it."
Louzan added: "His simplicity and his ability to work have led us to achieve this success, together with an unforgettable group of players with this Spanish national team."
Joint hosting ambition builds
Making sure De la Fuente’s future is secured comes at the same time as Spain’s bid to host the 2030 World Cup final as part of the jointly staged tournament with Portugal and Morocco. The federation feels that being holders of both the men’s and women’s world titles strengthens the country’s case to stage the showpiece match.
On the venue for the final, Louzan said: "It would be difficult to understand any outcome other than Spain hosting the final of that great World Cup."
Reigning champions prepare defence
After conquering the world, Spain must quickly switch their attention to the next cycle and the defence of their title. Getting De la Fuente tied down provides vital tactical stability as he integrates the next wave of young stars into his successful setup. That continuity will be tested immediately in the UEFA Nations League next month, with major clashes against England and Croatia on the horizon.
