All indications suggest Arsenal could still sign Julian Alvarez: report

Arsenal have been keen on Julian Alvarez throughout the summer, and a move for the Argentina international remains a possibility.

Arsenal could still complete a deal to bring Julian Alvarez in before the transfer window shuts.

The Premier League champions have pursued the Argentine for the entire summer, but FourFourTwo understands that the player would prefer to stay in La Liga rather than return to England with Arsenal, with a move to Barcelona seen as his dream option.

Even so, reports from Spain indicate the transfer is not over for the Gunners, with Alvarez appearing increasingly likely to head to North London.

A fresh report from Spanish publication Sport says that “Julian Alvarez’s future will be decided in the coming hours, and all signs point to England,” with Atletico Madrid “pushing” the striker towards N5 instead of a rival destination.

Earlier this summer, the 26-year-old said that “the best thing for everyone is a transfer and I want to fulfil my dream,” while Real Madrid are reported to have had a £129 million bid turned down by their city rivals.

Since then, Gunners manager Mikel Arteta has personally called Alvarez, though it seems the former Manchester City forward still prefers Barcelona above all other options.

Atletico sporting director Mateu Alemany is currently in London to hold talks over a deal for Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson, and Sport Witness reports that Alvarez could also be discussed as a possible option for the Gunners during the visit.

Arsenal could yet have another role in the wider transfer story, with Viktor Gyokeres now being linked with Barca and Gabriel Jesus also said to be on the Blaugrana shortlist — but FourFourTwo understands that Arteta is prepared for the possibility of not signing another forward at all this summer.

Gabriel Martinelli has reportedly rejected an offer from Galatasaray, while Arsenal are also said to hold an interest in Victor Osimhen.

The Gunners are not involved in the chase for Bradley Barcola, and their attempts to sign Vinicius Jr and Morgan Rogers have both failed, with the former choosing to extend his contract in Madrid and the latter opting to join Chelsea in a British record transfer.

Sport Witness have passed on the Sport report from Spain, stating that Arsenal’s offer for Alvarez stands at “€80m plus Viktor Gyokeres,” and that the star “can double his salary at the Emirates and have a key role under Mikel Arteta.”

The Argentine could potentially replace Martinelli on the left wing, or be used more centrally as an alternative to Kai Havertz, depending on who leaves London Colney in the coming weeks.

According to Transfermarkt, Alvarez is valued at €120m. Arsenal return to Premier League action tonight against Coventry City.
