New Delhi: The holy festival of Rakshabandhan, a symbol of unwavering love and trust between brother and sister, is celebrated every year on the full moon date of the month of Sawan. This year, there is some doubt in the minds of people regarding the date of Rakshabandhan whether this festival should be celebrated on 27th August or 28th August. According to religious scriptures and scholars, keeping the importance of Udaya Tithi paramount, celebrating the festival of Rakshabandhan on 28 August 2026 will be scriptural and auspicious. The main festival of Rakshabandhan will be celebrated with great enthusiasm across the country on 28th August.

full moon date time

According to astrologers, the full moon date of Saavan month is starting on 27 August 2026 at 9.08 am. This date will last till 9.48 am the next day i.e. 28th August.
In Sanatan tradition, in determining any festival, only the date at the time of sunrise is given importance. Purnima Tithi will be present at the time of sunrise on 28th August, hence the main festival of Rakshabandhan will be celebrated with great enthusiasm across the country on 28th August.

Two auspicious times to tie Rakhi

Many times siblings have to travel from one place to another or are short of time due to daily commitments. Keeping this situation in mind, two best auspicious times will be available to tie Rakhi on 28th August. The first and best Muhurta will be in the morning, which will start from 6:24 am on August 28 and will continue till 9:48 am (till the end of Purnima Tithi). During this period, sisters can tie Rakshasutra on the wrist of their brothers and pray for their long life. If a person is not able to use the morning Muhurta due to travel or any other reason, then another auspicious option for him would be 'Abhijeet Muhurta'. This will last from 12:01 pm to 1:05 pm, in which Raksha Sutra can be tied without any doubt.

The shadow of lunar eclipse will remain ineffective

Often auspicious works are stopped on Rakshabandhan due to the shadow of Bhadra Kaal, but this time there is news of relief for the devotees. Bhadra, which starts at 9.08 am on August 27, will end at 9.32 pm on the same day. Since the main festival is being celebrated on 28th August, there will be no effect of Bhadra on that day. Questions were also being raised regarding the lunar eclipse on August 28. According to astronomy and astrological beliefs, this lunar eclipse will remain invisible in India and will occur during the day, due to which its Sutak period or any religious effect will not be valid in India. The festival of Rakshabandhan can be celebrated with full devotion and joy on 28th August without any fear or hesitation.
