Arsenal forward Viktor Gyokeres is reportedly trying to secure a move away, only a year after joining the Gunners.
That is according to a striking new report from Spain, which says the Sweden international is in “daily” talks over leaving Arsenal for Barcelona, with the Catalan club said to be interested in him.
Gyokeres scored 21 goals in 56 appearances across all competitions last season as Arsenal won the Premier League and reached the Champions League final, although he did not convince everyone.
As per Spanish outlet Cope, the striker “wants to leave” N5, with his agent in discussions with Barca sporting director Deco, who is not yet interested in signing the player.
Although Gyokeres led the line as Arsenal claimed their first Premier League title in 22 years, manager Mikel Arteta often opted for Kai Havertz in attack for the biggest matches because of the German's stronger hold-up play.
Gyokeres has also faced criticism over his all-round game. While he has scored freely since returning to English football, his record against last season's top 10 sides was inconsistent, which led to Arteta switching focus towards Julian Alvarez as a possible replacement.
At present, though, the claim that the 28-year-old is unhappy does not quite match up with what he has said recently, with Fotbollskanalen having carried his remarks earlier this summer.
“Of course it’s flattering to see that clubs are interested, but I feel extremely comfortable at Arsenal,” Gyokeres said, adding, “After the season we have had, I only have positive feelings.”
FourFourTwo understands that Gyokeres is lower down the list than others when it comes to possible departures before the transfer window closes, with fellow attacker Gabriel Jesus also believed to be on Barcelona's radar.
Gyokeres has so far enjoyed the competition with Havertz in the Arsenal squad, with the German having spent large parts of the Gunners' title-winning campaign out injured.
The Athletic reported last year that Gyokeres' agent had given up his fee on the transfer in order to help push through the striker's move from Sporting, where he scored 97 goals in 102 appearances in Portuguese football.
For now, it still appears highly unlikely that he is actively pushing for an exit, despite some difficult moments last season.
According to Transfermarkt, Gyokeres is valued at €65m. Arsenal will face Coventry City when Premier League action resumes.
