Manchester United have missed out on a significant financial boost after Real Betis made a decision on Antony’s future.
To describe Antony as a flop at United would be a huge understatement.
Signed from Ajax in the summer of 2022 in a deal worth around £81 million, Antony came nowhere near living up to that hefty fee.
He struggled to adapt to the Premier League and was frequently labelled a limited player, with critics often highlighting his excessive dependence on his left foot.
The Brazilian scored just 12 goals in 96 appearances for the Red Devils. He was later sent on loan to Betis, where he impressed enough for the La Liga club to move to sign him permanently.
Antony joined Betis for €21 million. United also included specific contractual clauses in the agreement that would have guaranteed them a substantial financial benefit if the player was sold in future.
According to Mateo González of ABC Sevilla, Betis received a €50 million (£42.7 million) offer for Antony from an unnamed club outside the Premier League.
United had inserted a sell-on clause that would have entitled them to around 50 percent of the profit Betis made from any sale of Antony.
Had Betis accepted the bid, United would have pocketed about €15 million (£12.8 million). However, Betis turned it down, meaning the English side missed out on the expected income.
It is understood Betis regard Antony as a vital member of their squad and are unwilling to approve his departure. There are also doubts within the club over whether they would be able to find and sign a replacement of similar quality.
Antony has also been linked with Besiktas, who are looking at other options after missing out on Mohamed Salah.
Meanwhile, Michael Carrick and his players begin their Premier League campaign on Saturday with a match against Hull City.
Overall credibility: 7/10
