Keep these 2 things in mind while buying gold

One should always be wise while buying gold jewelery or coins so that any kind of fraud can be avoided:

  • Buy only certified gold: Always buy gold which is BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) hallmarked. Hallmark provides accurate information about the purity and carat of gold, such as an alphanumeric code (example: AZ4524) recorded on it.
  • Please cross check the price: Before deducting the purchase receipt, please verify the current price of gold from various reliable sources, such as IBJA. Apart from this, also remember that the rate of gold is decided differently according to 24 carat, 22 carat and 18 carat.

How to identify real silver? Learn 4 easy ways

While buying silver from the market, it is natural to have doubts about its purity. You can get an initial idea of this by doing some easy tests at home:

  • Check with Magnet: Pure silver is never attracted to a magnet. If any of your silver items stick fast to the magnet, then there is every possibility that it may be adulterated with some other metal. However, this test alone does not completely determine the purity of silver.
  • Test with ice: Silver has the property of transferring heat and cold very fast. If you place a piece of ice on a silver surface, it will melt much faster than normal metals. This is an easy home hint.
  • Pay attention to the smell: Pure and genuine silver does not have any strange or metallic smell. If there is a strong or unusual metallic smell coming from the jewelry or accessories, it may be adulterated.
  • Try rubbing with a white cloth: If you rub silver with a clean white cotton cloth, sometimes a light black or dark mark is left on the cloth. This happens due to the natural oxidation process on the upper surface of silver.

Always remember that these home remedies only help you in getting a rough idea. To know the 100% purity of silver, the most reliable way is to look at the hallmark, 925 stamp on it or get the purity test done by a professional.
