FASTag Local Pass Online: Do you pass through a toll plaza daily or several times a week and find the repeated payment of toll tax bothersome? If so, this news might be for you. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has expanded its FASTag-based digital local pass facility to cover 121 toll plazas across the country. The good news is that eligible vehicle owners can now obtain a monthly local pass online from the comfort of their homes.

According to the NHAI, the digital local pass eliminates the need for people to visit toll plazas to submit or verify documents. Eligible applicants can apply directly online via the 'Rajmarg Yatra' mobile app. The initiative aims to make the tolling system more transparent, convenient, and citizen-centric.

Who will benefit?
Under the digital local pass scheme, individuals residing within a 20-kilometer radius of an eligible toll plaza can apply for the pass. Once issued, vehicle owners can enjoy unlimited travel through the nearby toll plaza for the entire month. Previously, this required visiting the toll plaza to submit proof-of-residence documents, but the process has now been made entirely online.

How will eligibility be verified?
According to the NHAI, the new system utilizes government digital platforms such as DigiLocker and Vahan. With the applicant's consent, details regarding residence, vehicle registration, and FASTag will be verified digitally. Additionally, GIS-based technology will be used to verify whether the applicant's address falls within the prescribed 20-kilometer limit of the respective toll plaza.

Started in Delhi
The digital local pass facility was initially launched as a pilot project at the Mundka-Bakkarwala toll plaza in Delhi in July 2026. Following a successful trial, it has now been extended to 121 toll plazas nationwide. The NHAI states that more toll plazas will be included in this facility in the coming months. How will people benefit?
According to the NHAI, digital verification and online processes will largely eliminate the need for manual documentation and physical verification. This will provide relief to local commuters, expedite the process, and enhance transparency in toll operations.
