Indian bowlers dominated Sri Lanka securing series lead

Shubman Gill led his Indian side to an impressive 165-run victory against Sri Lanka on the fifth day of their opening match in Galle.

Chasing a steep target of 372, the hosts eventually collapsed for 206 runs during the second session. Manav Suthar delivered a spectacular performance with the ball, picking up six wickets for just 55 runs to secure his second five-wicket haul in consecutive matches.

Tactical Shift Breaks Stubborn Resistance

Earlier in the morning, home captain Dhananjaya de Silva and young all-rounder Sonal Dinusha defended aggressively. They frustrated visiting bowlers while building a strong 95-run partnership. Recognising this stalemate, head coach Gautam Gambhir intervened with tactical advice for Ravindra Jadeja. Jadeja changed his bowling angles and quickly removed de Silva, who top-edged a paddle sweep after being constantly attacked on the stumps. Jadeja finished with figures of one wicket for 71 runs. Niroshan Dickwella walked in next but lost his focus quickly. Yashasvi Jaiswal challenged him to hit boundaries, which resulted in Dickwella edging a cut shot off Prasidh Krishna just before the lunch break. This shifted the momentum firmly back to the visitors.

Suthar Dominates Final Session

Dinusha displayed exceptional grit throughout both innings, accumulating 184 total runs in this match. His resistance ended at 84 runs off 128 balls when Suthar caught him at leg slip from round the wicket. Following this dismissal, the remaining batting lineup fell rapidly. Suthar dismissed Prabath Jayasuriya and Lahiru Kumara in the very same over.

This victory improved India's World Test Championship points percentage from 48.14 to 53.33. They currently sit fifth in the global standings behind Australia at 77.77, South Africa at 75.00, New Zealand at 72.22, and Bangladesh at 66.67.
