Why Are Your Plant Leaves Turning Yellow? 4 Things You Need to Know
Seeing yellow leaves on a once-healthy plant can be frustrating, especially when you think you’re doing everything right. While an occasional yellow leaf can simply be part of a plant’s natural growth cycle, widespread or sudden yellowing can indicate that something in the plant’s environment needs attention.
Here are four common reasons your plant leaves may be turning yellow and what you can do about them.
1. You May Be Overwatering Your Plant
Overwatering is one of the most common causes of yellow leaves, particularly for indoor plants.
When soil remains wet for too long, the roots may not receive enough oxygen. Prolonged waterlogged conditions can also encourage root problems, which can eventually cause leaves to turn yellow, wilt or drop.
What to do: Check the soil before watering again. If the upper layer is still wet, wait until it has dried to an appropriate level for that particular plant. Make sure the pot has drainage holes and that excess water can escape.
Remember that different plants have different watering requirements, so there is no universal watering schedule.
2. Your Plant May Not Be Getting Enough Light
Plants need light to produce energy through photosynthesis. If a plant is kept in a location that is too dark for its needs, its growth may become weak and its leaves can gradually lose their healthy green color.
On the other hand, moving a shade-loving plant into intense direct sunlight can also cause problems, including leaf scorching.
What to do: Find out what type of light your plant requires. Move it gradually to a brighter or more suitable location rather than making a sudden dramatic change.
3. Nutrient Deficiency Could Be the Problem
Yellowing leaves can sometimes occur when a plant is not receiving enough essential nutrients.
For example, nitrogen deficiency often causes older leaves to become uniformly pale or yellow. Other nutrient deficiencies can produce different patterns, such as yellowing between the veins while the veins remain green.
What to do: Check whether your plant has been growing in the same soil for a long time and whether it requires fertilization. Use a fertilizer appropriate for the plant and follow the recommended dosage rather than adding extra fertilizer.
Over-fertilizing can damage roots and create additional problems.
4. Pests or Root Problems May Be Affecting the Plant
Tiny pests such as spider mites, aphids and scale insects can damage leaves by feeding on plant tissues. Look closely at both sides of the leaves and along stems for insects, webbing, sticky residue or unusual spots.
Root problems can also prevent the plant from absorbing water and nutrients properly. If yellowing is accompanied by persistent wilting despite adequate moisture, inspect the roots if appropriate.
What to do: Isolate a visibly infested plant from other houseplants and identify the pest before choosing a treatment. If the soil smells unpleasant or the roots appear dark and mushy, excessive moisture or root rot may be involved.
Don’t Remove Every Yellow Leaf Immediately
A single older leaf turning yellow is not necessarily a sign that your plant is unhealthy. Plants naturally shed older leaves as they produce new growth.
The important clues are how quickly the yellowing is spreading, which leaves are affected and what other symptoms appear alongside it.
Quick Check
Before changing your plant’s care routine, ask yourself:
- Is the soil staying wet for too long?
- Is the plant receiving the right amount of light?
- Has it been fertilized appropriately?
- Are there visible pests or signs of root problems?
- Are new leaves also turning yellow?
Once you identify the underlying cause, correct the care routine gradually and give the plant time to recover.
