Newcastle United have opened discussions with Manchester City over a possible move for midfielder Nico Gonzalez, according to The Athletic.

Although talks between the two Premier League clubs are still at an early stage, the 24-year-old, often described as a ‘mini Rodri’, has become one of the main names under consideration as Newcastle look to strengthen their midfield.

The Magpies are currently assessing the financial structure needed to pursue a deal for the former Barcelona and Porto midfielder, while also seeking clarity on whether he is available.

Gonzalez, who signed for Manchester City from FC Porto in early 2025, comes with an elite football background.

A product of Barcelona’s renowned La Masia academy, the Spaniard is known for his ability to carry the ball and his excellent distribution.

He has largely operated as Rodri’s understudy during his time at City so far, though he featured regularly last season because of his fellow Spaniard’s persistent injury concerns.

Even so, despite Rodri’s exit, Gonzalez still appears to face a difficult challenge in trying to secure consistent game time.

After the arrival of Elliot Anderson, and with City continuing their pursuit of more midfield signings, Newcastle feel they may be able to tempt Gonzalez by offering him an important role at St James’ Park under new manager Matthias Jaissle.

Newcastle are weighing up Gonzalez along with other leading targets as they prepare for a late push in the transfer window, having recently confirmed the signing of Amar Dedic.

If talks with Manchester City move in a favourable direction, the Magpies could act swiftly and table a formal opening bid for Gonzalez.

Newcastle have also been linked with Nicolas Seiwald and Tottenham Hotspur’s Lucas Bergvall.

The former has previously worked under Jaissle and is viewed as a more realistic option than the latter, who is presently valued at more than £50 million.
