Desk. The Government of India is no longer in a mood to be careless regarding the safety of children on social media platforms. In the conversation with Meta, the government has made it clear that if the laws to CSAM i.e. Child Sexual Abuse Material are violated, then the people concerned will not get legal protection. The government says that it is necessary for every digital platform to follow the law in India. Apart from this, checking of WhatsApp username has also intensified.
According to government sources, Meta has now shown more sensitivity regarding matters to CSAM. The platform is taking precautions towards filtering and removing illegal content. The government has made it clear to META that individuals or entities involved in CSAM- violations will not benefit from the safe harbor. Safe Harbor provides legal protection to Internet platforms for content posted by users under certain circumstances. However, this protection is not unlimited in case of violation of law.

Government sources said that whatever steps the government has taken are within the existing law and legal rights. The government claims that the prescribed legal and statutory system has been followed for any action. Additionally, the government has stated the need for Meta's content moderation system to take into account India's linguistic and cultural diversity. Simply moderating content based on global standards may not suffice in a diverse country like India.
The government is also keeping an eye on the issue to WhatsApp username. However, the government is not considering it only as a matter of meta. According to IT Ministry sources, the issue is being examined at an industry-wide level, as it pertains to other messaging platforms as well. The government says that these cases will be monitored further.
The government is also emphasizing on clearly labeling the content created with AI i.e. synthetically prepared content. Its purpose is to empower users to know whether the content in front of them is genuine or generated by AI.
