8th Pay Commission Latest News: The process regarding the 8th Pay Commission has now gained full momentum for over 10 million (1 crore) central government employees and pensioners. The Commission, headed by Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, is holding crucial meetings with employee unions and pensioner groups across various states and union territories in the country.
If you too are awaiting the new pay structure, basic salary, and pension revision, it is essential for you to know these five key updates based on the 8th Pay Commission's official portal and recent activities.
1- Round of meetings across the country: Hearings in Jaipur, Chandigarh, and Chennai
The 8th Pay Commission is currently in its consultation and analysis phase. The Commission is organizing a series of visits to hear the grievances and suggestions of various stakeholders:
Chennai (Tamil Nadu): Consultation meetings were held on September 7 and 8.
Puducherry: A hearing is scheduled for September 9.
Chandigarh: Meetings with employee organizations from the Union Territory and neighboring states are scheduled between September 16 and 18.
Jaipur (Rajasthan): The application submission process for meetings held on August 31 and September 1 has been completed.
2- Changes in consultant guidelines
The Commission has issued partial amendments to the guidelines regarding the appointment of consultants to accelerate its research and administrative tasks. The primary objective is to conduct a scientific and precise analysis of economic data, inflation indices, and financial proposals received from various sectors of the country.
3- What is the status regarding the fitment factor and minimum salary?
Alongside the Commission's meetings, discussions regarding the fitment factor have intensified among employees and pensioners. The fitment factor was 1.86 under the 6th Pay Commission (6th CPC) and was raised to 2.57 under the 7th Pay Commission (7th CPC). As of now, there has been no official announcement regarding the final fitment factor, minimum wage, or revised pension structure by the 8th Pay Commission. Employee unions are demanding a fitment factor ranging from 3.68 to 3.83; however, the final decision will depend on the Commission's recommendations and the government's approval.
4- Opportunity to provide direct suggestions under a transparent system
The Pay Commission has clarified its intent to make this process entirely democratic and transparent. Consequently, visits to various states are being undertaken to provide local federations, pensioner associations, and department-wise employee representatives with ample opportunity to present their issues and demands—both in writing and verbally.
5- When will the final report be released and the new pay scale implemented?
The Commission, constituted on November 3, 2025, has been given an 18-month timeframe to submit its recommendations and report. Once the series of nationwide meetings concludes, the Commission will analyze all submitted representations and prepare its report. Upon completion, the report will be submitted to the Central Government; the new pay structure will be implemented only after receiving approval from the Union Cabinet.
What should employees and pensioners keep in mind?
The 8th Pay Commission is currently in the initial stages of its assessment and consultations with stakeholders. No new salary or pension formula has been officially approved yet. Employees and pensioners are advised to rely solely on the 8th Pay Commission's official portal and official statements from the Ministry of Finance, rather than paying heed to rumors.
