Mumbai: VB Realty Cheetahs booked their place in the semi-finals of the Akcel World Padel League Season 4, powered by SpiceJet, after winning twice on Day 4 in Mumbai on Saturday. The Cheetahs first defeated Khan Tigers in the Eliminator before overcoming Hubtown Panorama Panthers 19-8 in the Qualifier to stay in contention for the title.
The two victories earned VB Realty Cheetahs a semi-final meeting with Aussie Mavericks Jaguars, who finished on top of the league stage. The other semi-final on August 16 will see Vedanta Leopards face Game Changers Lions, with the winners of the two matches advancing to the Season 4 final later in the evening.
Cheetahs overcome Khan Tigers in Eliminator
The Eliminator between Khan Tigers and VB Realty Cheetahs began with Jesus Moya and Jon Sanz taking on Andres Lancha and Lucas Campagnolo. The opening exchanges were closely contested, but Moya and Sanz gradually made better use of their opportunities. They pulled away as the set progressed and secured a 6-3 win to give the Cheetahs the early advantage.
Khan Tigers responded strongly in the second set through Javi Garcia and Inigo Jofre, who faced Coki Nieto and Lucho Capra. Garcia and Jofre controlled the set well and registered a 6-2 victory, bringing the Tigers back into the contest and leaving the Eliminator to be decided by the final set.
Aranzazu Osoro and Carla Mesa then faced Raquel Eugenio and Alejandra Alonso in the decider. Both pairs stayed close through much of the set, with neither side able to establish a comfortable lead. Osoro and Mesa eventually finished stronger, winning the set 6-3 and sending VB Realty Cheetahs through to the Qualifier against Hubtown Panorama Panthers.
VB Realty Cheetahs dominate Qualifier
Coming into the Qualifier after their victory over Khan Tigers, the Cheetahs maintained their momentum against Hubtown Panorama Panthers. Osoro and Mesa opened the contest against Marta Caparros and Marta Barrera and quickly gave their side the upper hand. The Cheetahs pair took the first set 6-2 to put early pressure on the Panthers.
The second set was much more competitive as Juan Tello and Eduardo Alonso of the Panthers faced Moya and Sanz. Both pairs were involved in long rallies and several close exchanges, with little separating them for much of the set. Moya and Sanz eventually edged it 7-5, extending the Cheetahs’ lead and leaving the Panthers needing a strong response.
The Panthers turned to Enri Goenaga and Rama Valenzuela in the final set against Nieto and Capra, but the Cheetahs again took control. Nieto and Capra established an early advantage and never allowed their opponents back into the contest, winning the set 6-1 to complete a convincing 19-8 victory and seal a semi-final place.
