Yan Diomande’s rise has been nothing less than extraordinary. In the last 17 months, he has made his professional debut for Leganes, completed a €20 million move to RB Leipzig, featured at the Africa Cup of Nations, claimed the Bundesliga Rookie of the Season award, and has now signed for one of the biggest clubs in world football: Real Madrid.

This summer, Diomande announced himself on the biggest platform of all, producing a Man of the Match performance in a World Cup victory over Ecuador. He also set up Ivory Coast’s opening goal against Curacao, helping the African side reach the World Cup knockout stage for the first time in their history.

For many across the globe, the 2026 World Cup was their first proper look at Diomande’s potential. But according to Todd Eason, that quality has been evident ever since the player first arrived in the USA four years ago.

“[In terms of the best players that I’ve coached], I think Diomande is by far the highest,” Eason said in an exclusive interview. “I’ve never had the chance to see a player at this level, let alone work with one. He was already at an extremely high level when he joined us as a 15-year-old, and it was a real pleasure to have the chance to work with him for a period.

“As Diomande got used to the country, you could really see him beginning to take off and settle in, and then the talent just kept pouring out of him,” added Eason, who served as DME Academy’s Director of Soccer from 2021 to 2024. “He’s probably the most talented player I’ve worked with, and I still don’t think we’ve seen everything he’s capable of doing.”

At the age of 9, Diomande left home and moved more than 100km away to join Académie Inter Foot Sud Comoé, where he finally began playing in a pair of boots. Six years later, he left Ivory Coast and set off alone on a one-way trip to Florida, where he joined DME Academy in Daytona Beach.

In spite of the language barrier and homesickness, Diomande became an attacking talisman for DME and affiliate side AS Frenzi, guiding them to the 2023 United Premier Soccer League title while also winning the Playoff Golden Boot and MVP. Even so, he was unable to secure a professional contract, with Orlando City and several other European clubs passing on him.

Diomande went back to his hometown of Abidjan after his student visa expired, but he was soon on the move again. He turned out for Leganes’ reserves in the Spanish fifth tier before making his first-team debut against Real Madrid on March 29, 2025. After only 10 appearances for relegated Leganes, he was sold to RB Leipzig for €20m, and he went on to score 13 goals and provide 10 assists in 36 appearances last season.

It has taken Leipzig only one year to earn a six-fold return on that investment, with Real Madrid paying a club-record €125m plus a possible €15m in bonuses and tying him down on a contract until 2033. With Rodrygo still recovering from an ACL tear, all indications suggest Diomande could beat out the likes of Brahim Díaz, Bernardo Silva, Arda Güler and Endrick for the starting role on the right side of Real’s attack.

“It’s going to be a scary thing once he reaches his prime,” Eason said. “I don’t know exactly what that will look like, whether it’s certain honours like winning the Champions League or picking up Man of the Match awards.

“Those are, to some extent, ways of measuring his ceiling, but I just think he’s a sponge and keeps learning more about the game and putting himself in positions where he’s going to succeed. I’m excited to see what he continues to develop into. It’s hard to say what his ceiling is, but he’s going to be on a team that will demand that ceiling from him.

“When he was with me, we would play matches, and thankfully my team was good enough that it wasn’t all Diomande, but a big part of it was,” added Eason, now General Manager of USL Championship side Miami FC. “But he would play the game and do whatever he needed to do to be successful in that match, and my job became finding opponents who would challenge my team more.”

“As we did that, we went from playing small regional youth club teams to MLS Academy teams to college teams, and Diomande was still excelling against every one of them. He was the best player on the pitch every time he played here, so we had to start facing professional teams. That’s when we began playing MLS Next Pro teams and winning those matches. It was like, ‘Holy cow, for a high school team to be beating pro clubs, and it’s because of Dio... what is his ceiling?’”
