The first day of the match was entirely in the name of India. Yashasvi Jaiswal (32 runs) and KL Rahul put on a 47-run opening partnership to give India a steady start. Devdutt Padikkal came to the crease after Yassav was unfortunately run out. Padikkal and KL Rahul put on a crucial century partnership for the second wicket. While Padikkal scored his maiden Test century, Rahul was hurt and retired on 77 runs. Skipper Shubman Gill scored only 16 runs. India lost just two wickets on a rain-affected first day.
On the second day, rain had a major impact on the game. The first session was canceled due to rain and only limited overs were bowled in the second session. On the second day, India lost their first wicket in the form of Rishabh Pant. Keshara Nuvantha sent Pant to the pavilion on 39 runs. After Pant's dismissal, Rahul returned to bat. However, Nuvantha could not give him a big innings. Rahul scored 82 runs off 175 balls with 10 fours and a six.

India lost their fifth wicket in the form of Devdutt Padikkal. Prabhat Jayasuriya stumps Padikkal out. Padikkal scored a brilliant 167 off 230 balls with the help of 15 fours and 1 six. Kesara Nuvantha dismissed Ravindra Jadeja for 13 runs. Then, Dhruv Jurel and Manav Suthar put on a 55-run partnership for the seventh wicket. Jurel contributed 51 runs off 68 balls with the help of 4 fours and 1 six. Mohammad Sirajan scored 11 runs and Manav Suthar returned to the tent as the eighth and ninth wickets with 24 runs. Left-arm spinner Prabhat Jayasuriya was the most successful bowler for Sri Lanka. He took four wickets for 109 runs. Kesara Nuwantha took three wickets, but India posted a solid first innings total of 460 runs.
