Andy Robertson is thoroughly deserving of the “remarkable achievement” that could see him move past Kenny Dalglish as Scotland’s most-capped player of all time, Colin Hendry has told GOAL. The former Liverpool defender, now with Tottenham, is just five appearances short of drawing level with his fellow Scot, who remains an Anfield icon.

Dalglish is the only player from Scotland to have reached 100 caps.

Dalglish, affectionately known as ‘King Kenny’, remains the only Scot to become a centurion. He brought up that landmark before ending his celebrated 15-year international career in 1986.

The standard he set has remained untouched for four decades, but Robertson is edging ever closer to rewriting the record books. The 32-year-old full-back made his Scotland debut in 2014 and now wears the captain’s armband.

History could be created before the end of 2026.

He led his country to the 2026 World Cup, where Scotland suffered another disappointing exit in the group stage. The seasoned left-back has given no sign that he is considering stepping away from international selection.

That leaves him in position to set a new record and go beyond Dalglish before the end of the calendar year, with Scotland scheduled to play six UEFA Nations League matches across September, October and November. Their opponents are set to be Slovenia, Switzerland and North Macedonia.

If Robertson makes a strong start to life at Spurs after ending a nine-year stay at Liverpool, then he is expected to remain a key figure for the national side under a new manager, with a replacement for the departed Steve Clarke still being sought.

Robertson is a model professional and worthy of the honour.

Speaking about Robertson’s attempt to break new ground, former Scotland centre-back Hendry told GOAL: “Remarkable really. But I think when you listen to everybody around about Andy Robertson, he’s the consummate professional.

“I've bled so many times for all the clubs that I've played for and everything else and ended up in the Premiership team of the year, I think twice. I think it was 94-95 and 96-97. And when your peers are choosing you and selecting you over and above somebody else, that means more to you than anything.

“But the fact that Andy's five caps away from King Kenny and Kenny was my idol - I played for him when he was manager at Blackburn, he was my idol there. And he's still my idol, Kenny.

“But if Andy was to overtake that, it would be a remarkable achievement because he's had an absolutely glittering career. He really has. And he'll still fancy himself. I think any player with that hall of achievements, honours behind them is, even if they’re half fit, they’d get a start for Scotland because that’s where we are at the minute.”

Robertson is now at Spurs after a trophy-filled spell with Liverpool.

During his time at Liverpool, Robertson won nine trophies, with that notable collection including two Premier League titles and a Champions League triumph. He is now aiming to help Tottenham recover after a worrying decline for the north London club.

Spurs have at least six matches to play, across the top flight and the Carabao Cup, before the first international break of the 2026-27 season arrives. Dalglish will be among those watching closely to see how everyone - including his fellow Scots - perform in the campaign ahead.
