Nico Elvedi was omitted from Borussia Monchengladbach’s squad for today’s pre-season friendly against Aston Villa, with Leeds United’s interest in the defender having resurfaced.

Sebastiaan Bornauw now looks likely to leave Elland Road for Hamburg, initially on a loan deal with an option to buy. Following that development, Leeds are understood to have renewed their pursuit of Elvedi.

Reports suggest Leeds have already agreed terms on a three-year contract with the 29-year-old, while Gladbach are believed to be seeking a fee of about £8.5m. It is also understood that movement has been made on the deal this week.

Gladbach announced their side this afternoon and Elvedi was not included, despite having played in earlier pre-season matches, including Wednesday’s 8-0 victory at SSVg Velbert. At the same time, Bornauw was named on the Leeds bench for the game against Augsburg, while Joe Rodon, Jaka Bijol and £34m summer signing Tarik Muharemovic were selected to start.

After Wednesday’s penalty shootout loss to Manchester United, Daniel Farke spoke positively about Bornauw’s professionalism and value to the squad, pointing in particular to his versatility and his strong record whenever he starts. Farke said talks are continuing and that the club will take the player’s wishes into account, although he would be pleased if Bornauw remains. He also made it clear that he rates the Belgian highly and indicated that more discussions are expected over the coming days.
