Tripura has taken a new step in putting its honey on the international map. For the first time, 1 metric tonne of mustard honey from the state has been exported to Dubai, UAE, creating a new overseas market opportunity for local beekeepers and farmers.

The shipment was made by Dergang Farmer Producer Organization (FPO) and facilitated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA).

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announced the development in a post on X, calling it a “sweet breakthrough” for North East beekeepers. He said the shipment connects the region's beekeepers with international markets while creating opportunities for better farmer incomes.

What Makes This Export Important?

The export consignment was flagged off by Tripura Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath. It marks the first-ever export of mustard honey from the area and gives Tripura's beekeepers a new route to international markets. The initiative is expected to help farmers associated with Dergang FPO get better price realization compared with local market opportunities. Export access can also create an additional income stream for beekeepers and encourage them to focus more on quality and export-oriented production.

What Exactly Is Mustard Honey?

Mustard honey is a monofloral honey, meaning the bees primarily collect nectar from one floral source, in this case, blooming mustard or sarson fields. The mustard honey involved in this initiative is described as raw, unprocessed, unheated and unpasteurised, with naturally occurring enzymes and pollen retained. The production is also described as free from additives and antibiotics given to bees.

The shipment was supported by M/s Salt Range Foods Pvt. Ltd., which has been working with Dergang FPO to strengthen bee production and develop an export-oriented honey supply. APEDA also worked with the stakeholders involved in facilitating the export. Its work in the North Eastern Region includes market linkages, capacity building, quality assurance and export facilitation.

Tripura's Agriculture Minister, Ratan Lal Nath, described the first export by Dergang FPO as a significant achievement for the state's beekeepers and farmers. He said the shipment demonstrates the potential of local agricultural products to reach international markets and create better income opportunities for farming communities.

He also highlighted the government's focus on strengthening apiculture, organic agriculture and Farmer Producer Organisations, with the aim of helping them access wider markets.

If similar collaborations continue, more farmers and FPOs could explore export-oriented production, quality improvement and value addition.
