Manchester United handed boost in Ibrahim Mbaye chase after Liverpool withdraw interest: report

Manchester United could take advantage of Liverpool’s decision not to continue their pursuit of the PSG wonderkid.

Manchester United’s move for Ibrahim Mbaye has been strengthened after Liverpool reportedly cooled their interest in the Paris Saint-Germain teenage star.

The Red Devils are among a number of clubs across Europe to have been linked with the 18-year-old winger, who scored against Michael Carrick’s side in a pre-season friendly last weekend.

Mbaye has already played 41 times for PSG and also scored for Senegal against France at World Cup 2026, but he may leave this summer in search of greater playing time.

Mbaye is the latest in a long line of French wonderkids developed by PSG and became the youngest player ever to start a match for the club when he featured against Le Havre in August 2024 at the age of 16 years, six months and 23 days.

His goal against France also made him the youngest African to score at a World Cup, at 18 years and 143 days, but his route into the first team at club level is currently blocked by players such as Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Desire Doue, Ousmane Dembele and Bradley Barcola.

Liverpool were one of the clubs keen to lure Mbaye away from Paris, but transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano says the Reds have now dropped out of the running.

The Anfield side are also chasing PSG team-mate Barcola, but they stepped back from a deal for Mbaye after being informed in discussions with his agent Jorge Mendes that a double transfer could cost €200m (£171m) — with Mbaye himself reportedly valued at between €40-50m (£34-42m).

That may leave the door open for United, who are said to be one of several clubs — along with Aston Villa, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund — to have made contact with the Champions League holders to ask about the teenager.

Mbaye could be nudged even closer to an exit if PSG complete a move for Spain’s World Cup final hero Ferran Torres, who is believed to be nearing a transfer from Barcelona.

The 26-year-old is capable of playing right across the forward line, which would increase competition for places in Luis Enrique’s squad, with Spanish newspaper AS reporting that the French champions could therefore consider allowing Mbaye to leave on loan.

The teenager would be an excellent addition for United, who are short of wide options going into the 2026/27 season.

Marcus Rashford has returned to the squad after his loan spell at Barcelona last season, while Amad Diallo has also impressed, but Carrick’s other available options include Patrick Dorgu, who arrived as a wing-back, and 19-year-old Shea Lacey.

Mbaye gave United a glimpse of what they could be signing with a composed finish in the second minute of last Saturday’s friendly in Stockholm, which ended 1-1.
