AC Milan are prepared to sanction Christopher Nkunku's departure after head coach Ruben Amorim decided the French forward is no longer part of his plans. Roma are now keeping a close watch on the uncertainty around the player and could even put forward a striking swap proposal involving their gifted Argentine creator Matias Soule.
Nkunku has unexpectedly been put up for transfer by Amorim at Milan. With a little under two weeks left before the summer transfer window officially shuts, Amorim has submitted his revised list of players he no longer wants to the club's hierarchy.
Although there was strong enthusiasm for him during the opening phase of pre-season training, the 28-year-old French attacker has since slipped down the pecking order. He is currently training on the edges of the first-team group at Milanello. According to Calcio Mercato, his sudden and unforeseen availability has immediately drawn the interest of domestic rivals Roma. The capital club have been tracking his situation closely as they aim to strengthen their squad.
Roma have maintained a serious and long-term interest in the former Chelsea forward. In the last January transfer window, Giallorossi boss Gian Piero Gasperini identified Nkunku as an ideal tactical fit. Gasperini felt the Frenchman was the right profile to improve his options on the left side of attack. But strong resistance from both the player and the Rossoneri management proved impossible to overcome at that stage.
Even after that earlier setback, Roma's appreciation of the 28-year-old has not diminished at all. After recent problems in their chase for Rodrigo Mora, sporting director Tony D'Amico is now getting ready to make a renewed move for Nkunku.
As per reports from Asromalive, an especially interesting transfer possibility is now starting to take shape. The talks could end up featuring talented Argentine attacker Soule as a direct counterpart in the deal.
For the Rossoneri, adding Soule to the arrangement would make complete sense. It is well known that the Argentine has been a key name on Milan's recruitment list as they look to strengthen their attacking midfield department. A straight swap involving the two players could offer the ideal tactical answer for both Serie A giants. Such a move would enable Amorim and Gasperini to quickly land the attacking players they want most.
Wages remain the biggest stumbling block.
Reaching an understanding on transfer valuations should not be especially difficult for either side. Milan and Roma both currently rate their respective attackers at broadly the same figure, around €35m to €40m. However, there is still a major complication over the players' existing salaries. Soule is said to earn only a little more than half of Nkunku's sizeable wage package, creating a financial gap that still needs to be addressed.
With the transfer deadline drawing ever closer, serious negotiations will be needed to get past this salary-related obstacle. It is still unclear whether Roma and Milan can put together a complicated financial structure that eventually works for everyone involved.
