Known for his rigorous classical music training and brilliant live performances, Sonu Nigam has closely witnessed the major changes in the music industry from the era when songs were recorded with live orchestras to today's digital age.

Talking about the increasing use of technology in the recording process in today's times, Sonu Nigam openly expressed his opinion on the popular topic of pitch-correction software i.e. auto-tune. He said, “The Auto-Tune era has definitely brought about a lot of changes. People say a lot of bad things about it, but I say, 'Whatever has happened has happened for the good.' Earlier you had to sing without auto-tune and we are lucky that we have 'riyaz' without it, so now we don't need it. But still I would say that I use auto-tune in some of my songs.”

He further added, “Today everything is on 440, whereas earlier everything was live. We had live Sarangi, live strings, so it was not necessary for our pitch to be absolutely perfect. Now everything is digitized; everything is going in a straight line and if your voice is raw, it will sound different from the rest. Earlier with live music we used to adjust accordingly, but now your song Will look different.”

Speaking on the correct use of Auto-Tune, Sonu said, “However, it is our responsibility not to use these resources to fix the voices of people who cannot sing. You give 99 percent of yourself and take it to 100 percent through Auto-Tune. Many actors use Auto-Tune in their songs and if they do so to fulfill their dreams, then there is absolutely no problem in it.
