According to Fabrizio Romano, Cristian Romero will play for Atlético Madrid next season. The agreement between the two clubs has been completed, with Tottenham agreeing to a package worth €40 million, including add-ons.
Gastón Edul and Matteo Moretto have also confirmed the transfer. The Argentina international arrives after a transfer window in which several earlier moves did not materialise in the end.
Inter Milan’s interest had already fallen through in July. Barcelona, meanwhile, chose not to proceed with the move just a few days ago.
Arsenal was also discussed as a possible destination, but Tottenham never considered selling him to a direct Premier League rival. That effectively cleared the way for the centre-back to move to Atlético Madrid.
Romero adds to Atlético Madrid’s defence ahead of next season. Diego Simeone therefore brings another internationally established centre-back into his squad.
