The month of Sawan is considered special for the worship of Lord Shiva. The festival of Hariyali Teej which falls in this holy month is also very special from religious and cultural point of view. This festival is celebrated on Tritiya Tithi of Sawan Shukla Paksha. Married women observe fast on this day to wish for the long life of their husband, happy married life and prosperity of their family. Unmarried girls also observe fast on Hariyali Teej with the wish of getting a good life partner.
Hariyali Teej is also called Shravani Teej. On this day, women do Solah Shringar, apply mehendi on their hands and sing folk songs of Sawan while swinging. There is a religious belief that on this day Mother Parvati performed rigorous penance to get Lord Shiva as her husband. Pleased with her penance, Lord Shiva accepted her as his wife. Therefore, Hariyali Teej is considered a symbol of the unbreakable love and marital happiness of Shiva and Parvati.
