High Blood: Silent diseases are increasing rapidly in India. In this, high blood pressure and diabetes are taking the form of a big epidemic. This is a lifestyle disease which does not cause any major problem suddenly, but in the long run it makes the body hollow from inside. The most worrying thing about blood pressure and diabetes is that a large number of people do not know that they have such a disease. Whereas according to Dr. Yogesh Chhabra (Head of Nephrology Unit and Director, Fortis Hospital, Shalimar Bagh), almost 8 out of 10 people in India are hypertensive, diabetic or prediabetic. Many people remain unaware that they have a disease because its symptoms are quite common and are not always visible.

These diseases arise gradually in the body and do not immediately affect a person’s daily work and routine. Therefore, it becomes important to get them checked regularly. Especially for those who may be at greatest risk due to their age, family history, weight or lifestyle.

Unhealthy lifestyle is the reason
Both high BP and high sugar are lifestyle diseases. People who exercise less, have unhealthy eating habits, are overweight, remain under stress for a long time and do not get enough sleep are more at risk. If you smoke and drink alcohol, the risk increases manifold.

Even if you do not notice any change in your health in the beginning, these diseases can later cause serious damage to the vital organs and blood vessels of the body. This affects the heart, kidneys, brain and eyes. If both these diseases are not treated, it can lead to heart attack, stroke, kidney disease and poor eyesight.

High BP and diabetes in youth
What is worrying is that the disease is now spreading to young adults. The main reason for which is believed to be modern work life and lifestyle.
