Ford is reportedly once again showing its four-door Mustang to dealers, and this time the carmaker is said to have shared a few fresh details as well. At the same event, Ford Motor Company also allegedly previewed the return of an affordable SUV to its range after quietly discontinuing the Ford Escape.

This update comes from a report by Automotive News, which cited unnamed dealer representatives who attended the Las Vegas event. Beginning with the Mustang, the vehicle shown to dealers was described as an early prototype and was compared with the Porsche Panamera in both size and design. That suggests Ford could be working on a sportback-style model, ideally one with a large and practical cargo area.

Reported claims from Ford executives regarding the four-door Mustang are raising expectations. Its starting price is said to be below $40,000, and it is also expected to deliver a 0-60-mph time of under four seconds. That said, it would be surprising if the sub-$40,000 version is also the quickest one. If we were to speculate, the four-cylinder EcoBoost version of the four-door Mustang may come in below $40,000, while hitting 60 mph that quickly would likely require stepping up to a larger engine, probably a V-8. For reference, a base Mustang GT coupe currently starts at $48,795, so it would not be surprising if the four-door version begins at a similar figure. Separate reporting from The Wall Street Journal also said some sources claimed the Mustang four-door could be offered with a hybrid option.

The final alleged detail to emerge from this latest dealer gathering concerns rear-seat room, which is reportedly better than what the Panamera offers. Even so, beating the Panamera in this area is not exactly a class-leading achievement, because Porsche’s large executive sedan provides enough space for an adult to sit comfortably but is hardly known as a packaging champion. Even so, it is encouraging to hear that the four-door Mustang is expected to offer more room.

Ford’s other reported surprise at the dealer meeting was a new small SUV. Dealers present are said to have seen mock-ups showing what a compact, affordable SUV could look like, and the key talking point here is pricing: Ford reportedly said this SUV would start at around $25,000. According to Automotive News, it is expected to be offered in both pure petrol and hybrid versions, with a planned on-sale date in 2029.

Based on reports from people who attended the meeting, the prototype images showed a vehicle with a wide, boxy shape, and one person even said it resembled the first-generation Escape. That said, this should be treated cautiously, because the SUV’s design is reportedly not final yet and it still does not have a name. Ford also did not reveal the SUV’s exact size, although it would make sense to assume the company is trying to plug the gap left behind by the discontinuation of the Escape and EcoSport.
