Health Desk. Blood cancer is a serious disease that affects the blood-forming tissues and cells. There are many types of it, among which leukemia, lymphoma and multiple myeloma are prominent. In the initial stages, its symptoms may seem like many common diseases, therefore, abnormal changes that persist in the body for a long time should not be ignored.
However, seeing any one of these symptoms does not mean blood cancer. Many other health problems can also cause such symptoms. Doctor's advice and necessary tests are important to know the exact cause.
1. Constant fatigue and weakness
Some types of blood cancer can cause the number of red blood cells to decrease, leading to conditions such as anemia. Due to this, the person may feel constant fatigue, weakness, dizziness or become more tired even while doing normal work. If weakness persists for a long time despite adequate rest, it is advisable to get it checked.
2. Frequent infections
Having frequent infections or taking longer than usual to recover from infections may also be signs to watch out for. In some types of blood cancer, the functionality of white blood cells can be affected, which can weaken the body's ability to fight infection.
3. Unexplained weight loss
Sudden weight loss without changes in diet or exercise can be a sign of many health problems. In some cases, blood cancer may be accompanied by loss of appetite or rapid weight loss due to changes in the body caused by the disease. If weight is continuously decreasing and there is no apparent reason, a doctor should be contacted.
4. Bruising or bleeding easily
Repeated blue or purple marks on the body without any major injury, unusual bleeding from the nose or gums may also indicate the need for examination. In some types of blood cancer, the number of platelets may decrease, which affects the blood clotting process.
5. Excessive sweating and fever at night
Recurrent fever without apparent cause or night sweats that require changing clothes or bedding may be seen in some types of blood cancer. Especially when it is accompanied by other symptoms like weight loss, weakness or swollen lymph nodes, medical examination becomes necessary.
