Hyundai Creta Back On Top As India’s Best Selling Mid-Size SUV
Sandy Verma | August 11, 2026 9:24 PM CST

The Hyundai Creta has returned to the top of the mid-size SUV sales chart with 18,088 units dispatched in July 2026. That is a remarkable recovery from June, when Creta sales fell to just 7,168 units and the SUV slipped to ninth place in the same segment.

July volumes were 152 per cent higher than June and 7 per cent above the 16,898 units sold in July 2025. The Creta also took a 13.8 per cent share of a mid-SUV market that expanded sharply to 1,31,513 units, up 42.5 per cent year on year.

The comeback matters because the Creta is no longer defending its position against only the familiar Seltos, Grand Vitara and Hyryder. July’s list includes newer high-volume models such as the Maruti Suzuki Victoris, Tata Sierra and Mahindra 9S, while Mahindra continues to occupy several positions with the Scorpio, Thar, Bolero and XUV 7XO.

The Mahindra Scorpio finished second with 16,009 units, only 2,079 behind the Creta. Its sales grew 16.5 per cent from 13,747 units a year earlier, giving it a 12.2 per cent segment share.

The Kia Seltos produced an even bigger surprise. July sales reached 12,541 units compared with 6,010 in July 2025, a 108.7 per cent jump. That moved the Seltos into third place with a 9.5 per cent share.

Maruti’s Victoris followed at 11,334 units in fourth place. Add the Grand Vitara’s 8,127 units and Maruti actually dispatched 19,461 units through its two mid-size SUVs. The Creta still remains the highest-selling individual model, but Hyundai is now fighting rivals that can attack the segment with more than one strong nameplate.

Mahindra’s Thar recorded 10,558 units, the Bolero 9,336 and the XUV 7XO 8,233. Toyota’s Hyryder managed 7,187 units, while the Sierra contributed 6,327.

The Creta’s July result looks even stronger beside its June performance. A month earlier, the Scorpio led at 14,097 units, followed by the Thar at 10,669 and Victoris at 10,035. The Creta’s 7,168 units represented a 54.6 per cent year-on-year decline and only a 6.2 per cent segment share.

One month later, Creta volumes more than doubled and the SUV was back at number one. Hyundai’s wider July performance also improved, with domestic dispatches reaching 54,210 units. The Creta alone contributed roughly one-third of that total.

The breadth of the Creta range helps it compete across a wide price band. Prices currently start at Rs 10.90 lakh, ex-showroom. Customers can choose a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol, 1.5-litre diesel or 1.5-litre turbo-petrol, with manual, IVT, torque-converter automatic and dual-clutch gearbox choices depending on the engine and variant.

July also shows why one month at the top cannot be treated as an easy win. The segment added almost 39,300 units compared with July 2025, and much of that growth came from competitors rather than the Creta.

The Seltos more than doubled its volume. Victoris added over 11,000 units as an entirely new nameplate. Grand Vitara grew 27.5 per cent, Scorpio 16.5 per cent and Harrier 49 per cent. Even after Creta’s strong recovery, its 13.8 per cent segment share means more than six out of every seven vehicles in this broad category carried another badge.

For now, however, the ranking is unambiguous. The Creta sold 2,079 units more than the Scorpio and 5,547 more than the Seltos in July. After a June in which it fell outside the top eight, Hyundai’s most important SUV has returned to the number-one position in a single month.
